THE GYPSY ROBE
Tradition has always been part of the theatre. The Gypsy Robe is just one more tradition for the singing and dancing chorus or ensemble in a musical production. The tradition started October 12, 1950, when Call Me Madam, starring Ethel Merman, opened on Broadway.
Since its production of Will Rogers Follies, Shiloh Theatrical Productions has revived this tradition and presented The Gypsy Robe to an outstanding member of a chorus or ensemble who worked beyond expectations. Along with being "the best they could be" in the current production, this performer also helped in any or all chores connected with the show, which could include set building or dismantling, sweeping the stage and maintaining the rehearsal space, running errands, or just helping another actor. And, of course, always displaying a positive attitude and a winning smile. The rules of the Gypsy Robe are as follows: The Robe goes only to musicals with a chorus or ensemble, and only to a member of that ensemble. The Robe is embellished with the logo of each show and the name of the cast member to whom it was awarded. Before each performance, the new recipient must put on the robe and circle the stage three times while each performer in the show reaches out and touches the robe, for luck. When the show has ended, the lucky person keeps it until the next show, when the robe is delivered to the theatre and to the next recipient. And the tradition goes on and on. The Gypsy Robe becomes more distinguished with each new colorful insignia.
.
